After the nationalization of 14 major banks in the year 1969, the National Institute of Bank Management was formed with a small department to overlook the personnel selection. This department was called the Personnel Service Selection unit, which later came to be known as the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) in the year 1984, with Dr. A. S. Deshpande as the founder-director. The IBPS has been an autonomous body since its inception helping various banks, almost 65 now (including Regional Rural Banks), to select the most suitable candidates for the jobs.
The IBPS conducts five examinations throughout the year for the banking sector: two exams for Regional Rural Banks, one for clerical level, one for probationary officers and one for specialist officers (agricultural, law, technical).
The examinations conducted are as follows:
- CRP Specialist Officers
- CRP PO/MT
- CRP Clerical
- CRP RRBs (officers)
- CRP RRB (Office Assistant)
More than one crore candidates apply every year with almost 60-70% of them taking the examination. As per the IBPS, 1.01 crore registered for IBPS examination in the year 2018-19, indicating the growing attraction of the youth towards the Banking and Finance Sector.
